About the event
The 250th anniversary of American independence, celebrated throughout 2026, offers unique opportunities to explore the country's rich cultural heritage from fresh contemporary perspectives. Forging an American Musical Identity (FAMI) is dedicated to the discovery and interpretation of music written in the United States during the long nineteenth century, as well as the performers and teachers who created a unique American musical experience. This period remains underexplored and underappreciated for its vital musical contributions to the cultural history of the United States. FAMI will promote concerts and events that feature this unexplored music and its stories throughout 2026 and later.
The kickoff event for this exploration of our country’s rich musical heritage will be Forging an American Musical Identity in the Long Nineteenth Century, a diverse and exciting multidisciplinary conference in Manhattan (January 28-30, 2026). There will be over 30 papers, 3 lecture-recitals, and a panel discussion covering the world and music…
